Q: Who can take composition lessons?

A: Jordan welcomes students aged 14 and above, from complete beginners to aspiring college applicants and adult learners.

Q: Do I need prior musical experience?

A: For beginners, no prior musical background is required, but you should be ready to engage in additional music theory work alongside your composition studies. If you are a student currently enrolled in school, it's ideal to be participating in a music course, such as an ensemble.

Q: What is Jordan's teaching philosophy?

A: Jordan's teaching philosophy aims to balance your individual compositional goals with broadening your musical horizons, often diving into relevant music theory or history topics to provide a holistic understanding. He strives to teach in a way that helps students with their individual goals, but balances that with broadening their horizons.

Q: What will I learn in composition lessons?

A: You will focus on honing your command of melody, harmony, rhythm, and orchestration, all crucial elements for developing a distinctive artistic identity. Jordan also offers guidance for students with specific professional goals, including preparing competitive portfolios for university composition programs.

Q: What software will I need for lessons?

A: Students will be expected to learn and utilize a music notation software program (such as Sibelius, MuseScore, or Dorico).

Q: Will I need to write music on paper?

A: Yes, you will also be asked to write music by hand on paper as part of your lessons.

​

Q: Do I need to have an instrument?

A: While not strictly required, it's ideal if you have an instrument available to play on, as this can greatly aid the compositional process.

Q: Where are lessons held?

A: Lessons can be conducted in-person at Jordan's home in Longmont, Colorado, or conveniently online via Zoom, depending on your preference and location.

Q: What is the lesson length and frequency?

A: Lessons are offered on a weekly basis and can be either 60 or 90 minutes in duration, depending on your preference and goals.

Q: How much do lessons cost?

A: Lessons cost one dollar per minute of instruction. Payment can be made via cash, Venmo, or check. Venmo and cash are preferred.

​

Q: What is your cancellation policy?

A: Lessons must be canceled at least 24 hours in advance to avoid being charged for the full lesson fee. However, you are welcome to reschedule a lesson within the same week at no additional charge, provided it's done at least 24 hours in advance.
